On behalf of our client, we are hiring a hands-on technical lead to own software architecture and delivery for manufacturing automation projects.

The Role

You will lead software for projects combining backend services, robotics, industrial equipment, and operator-facing applications. You’ll take projects from requirements and system design through implementation, commissioning, and production support. High independence is expected: turning ambiguous manufacturing problems into reliable software systems.

Responsibilities

• Own software architecture and technical delivery.

• Translate production requirements into practical designs and implementation plans.

• Define service boundaries, APIs, data models, integrations, and communication patterns.

• Build and evolve Python backend services and APIs, e.g. FastAPI.

• Design REST, event-driven, and service-to-service communication.

• Integrate software with robots, PLCs, industrial equipment, and external platforms.

• Work with messaging, async processing, and real-time data flows.

• Drive projects from early discussions through deployment and production support.

• Review designs/code, set engineering standards, and mentor engineers.

• Collaborate with frontend, robotics, controls, and mechanical teams.

• Improve reliability, observability, performance, and maintainability.

Requirements

• 5+ years software engineering, strong backend/distributed systems.

• Strong Python production experience.

• API frameworks: FastAPI, Flask, or Django.

• Architecture, API design, data modeling, distributed systems.

• Async programming, background processing, messaging, event-driven systems.

• Databases: MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or similar.

• Caching/state management: Redis or similar.

• Docker and containerized development/deployment.

• Ownership of significant projects from design to production.

• Ability to make architectural decisions independently and explain trade-offs.

• Comfort with incomplete requirements and ambiguous problems.

• Strong debugging across services and system boundaries.

• Git, testing discipline, CI/CD.

• Good communication with engineers, stakeholders, and customers.

• Willing to travel occasionally to customer sites in the US and Europe.

Nice to Have

• Industrial automation, robotics, manufacturing software, MES, hardware-integrated systems.

• PLC, robot, CNC, sensor integration.

• MQTT, gRPC, WebSockets.

• Microservice or distributed system architecture.

• Systems where reliability matters because software interacts with physical processes.

• DevOps: deployment, monitoring, logging, production troubleshooting.

• Leading or mentoring engineers.

• Customer-facing technical requirements and solution architecture.
