This talk explores real-world challenges of state management in distributed systems, focusing on eventual consistency issues we encountered with cookie-based state handling and how we evolved our architecture using Passport and Heartbeat to improve reliability and correctness.
We’ll walk through the architectural trade-offs, failure modes, and lessons learned while operating at scale — including where theoretical guarantees diverge from production realities.
If you are an architect or engineer designing distributed systems, this session will provide practical insights into consistency models, state ownership, and resilient system design.

I am a Senior Software Engineer at DraftKings, where I design and scale resilient, high-performance backend systems powering one of the leading global platforms in sports entertainment and gaming. I focus on building fault-tolerant distributed systems that operate reliably at scale, supporting millions of users in real time.
My work centers on distributed systems architecture, state management, and consistency models, where I’ve led critical initiatives to improve reliability and correctness in production environments. Most recently, I drove the evolution of our state management strategy — transitioning from JWE-based approaches to Passport and heartbeat-driven mechanisms — to address real-world eventual consistency challenges and strengthen system guarantees.
I am passionate about bridging theory and practice: turning complex architectural trade-offs into pragmatic, scalable solutions. Beyond system design, I actively contribute to engineering best practices, operational excellence, and mentoring fellow engineers.
My goal is simple: build systems that are not only scalable and performant, but predictable, observable, and resilient under real-world conditions.
