Аrchitecture diagrams are only the beginning. The real test of a distributed system starts when it goes into production.

This talk explores the hidden costs of running cloud-based platforms at scale, based on ractical experience from Azure-based implementations. It focuses on the challenges that are easy to underestimate during design: networking cost and complexity, connectivity disruptions, telemetry volume, observability gaps, and the operational pressure of reacting to issues quickly.

Using practical examples from IoT platforms, the session looks at how architects can shift their thinking from “can this scale?” to “can this scale while remaining observable, cost-aware, supportable, and simple to operate?”

The session will cover:

>>> Private networking costs and common production pitfalls.
>>> Telemetry and logging volumes, and their impact on cost and clarity.
>>> Scalability challenges when third-party systems and consumers become the bottleneck.
>>> Session-based processing and the operational complexity it introduces.
>>> Observability of both the happy path and high-volume failure scenarios.

The talk includes practical examples from the IoT world, but the lessons apply broadly to cloud-native, event-driven, and integration-heavy systems.
