Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the 6 months of your internship?

vRealize Orchestrator product is a platform used for achieving extensibility in public, private or hybrid cloud environments by providing means of integration with external systems.

One of the main building blocks of vRO is its ability to expose custom objects and methods based on the desired external systems’ API, which can later be used in scripting to automate customers’ processes and contact the systems transparently using simple extended JavaScript. Such objects and methods are usually created by writing a custom plug-in for the third-party system – a relatively bulky and non-straight forward Java project. This can sometimes be too much of an overhead and engineering investment for customers, who want to get value faster and easier.

That’s where the intern project comes into play. The intern project’s goal is to provide an easy-to-use, reliable way of defining and using custom objects right from the Orchestrator interface – no outside project or Java required to integrate external systems. The customer would be able to leverage existing vRO scripting to design and manage the behavior of such “dynamic types”.

• In the first month you will get familiar with the Orchestration platform and how it enables various cloud automation scenarios. You will participate in refining the functional specification and development tasks. You will also research all the required technologies you’ll need to use.
• During the next 2-3 months you will be developing a plug-in for the vRealize Orchestrator and you will write unit and functional tests to ensure the expected quality of you work.
• The last months will be dedicated to ensuring that the plug-in is enterprise ready – make sure all of the type definitions and object handling is done in a scalable and performant way, such that the plug-in can respond reliably even under a lot of loads and many created objects, and be fault-tolerant to external system failures and performance issues. Go through the full CI/CD process of setting up pipelines for the plug-in to achieve the end goal of delivering the developed and verified plug-in in production as part of a future product release.
• At the end of the internship, you will present your project to the team.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing?

• Design the project architecture – make decisions about how to best implement the solution such that it meets the functional and quality requirements. You will get knowledge in software architecture and the product release cycle.
• Implement the solution – follow the good coding standards, ensure that your project is easy to maintain.
• Define the underlying database schema needed for caching purposes and resiliency.
• Write unit and integration tests with Junit and other testing frameworks
• Manage project pipelines by integrating with Jenkins flow
• Run and troubleshoot the project – involves basic usage of Kubernetes, SSH remote access and Bash, working with IntelliJ IDE

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You’d be a part of the young and driven team, responsible for vRO plug-ins.

You will have two mentors for the project, who will be available for guidance and help of any sort:

• Ivanka Kovacheva, Senior Engineer – a very experienced member of the vRO team, who has a lot of hands-on experience with the vRO product and has worked on resolving some of the most pressing performance and scalability issues with the product’s most demanding customers.
• Borislava Bagaliyska, Software Engineer – one of the most passionate members of the vRO team who started as an intern two years ago and is now one of the most talented and contributing members of the vRO plug-ins team.
• Hiring manager – Dimitar Ivanov, Manager, R&D – a very driven and positive leader, who always seeks to help, empower and advance his team to be their best selves while feeling heard and valued at the workplace.
