Job Description

SUSE Packaging is a team that handles tens of hundreds of packages both in SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE distributions. We are responsible for fixing bugs and security issues and we also shape the new versions of our distributions by delivering new features for those packages.

We are looking for a „Linux Distribution Engineer – General Packager“ – a software engineer with a good understanding of C/C++ and low-level Linux utilities that will help maintain a variety of low-level system utilities and other RPM packages. The ideal candidate has already gained some experience in developing software for a Linux distribution and understands the complex mechanic of packaging and the structure of a Linux system.

In your role you will maintain multiple packages (e.g. strace, sed, xiterm, smartmontools, nut, kbd, xscreensaver, libmount, powerman, …), debug issues, provide bug and security fixes, update packages to the latest versions and deliver requested features. You will cooperate and collaborate with the upstream and openSUSE community and interact closely with SUSE Maintenance and Security team.

You will also help to maintain the Weblate package or help to organize translation rounds within SUSE Linux Enterprise releases. Thus, knowledge of the localization process (translations, .po files, gettext, …) and knowledge of Python and Python packaging is welcome.

Expected Skills

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
• At least 2 years of relevant experience as a Software Engineer
• Good general understanding of a Linux operating system and Linux utilities
• Proficiency in C/C++
• Very good system debugging skills
• Experience with building software packages for Linux systems
• Good communication skills and fluency in verbal and written English

Desired Skills

• Experience with building a Linux distribution
• Familiarity with the RPM package format
• Broader hands-on experience in packaging software for Linux systems
• Knowledge of the Linux localization process
• Familiarity with Weblate or Python is a bonus
