Senior Android Developer

Modeshift builds the software platform that runs public transport for 60+ cities across Europe and the US. Our platform covers contactless fare collection, real-time vehicle tracking, passenger mobile apps, operator tools, and the back-office systems behind them. From checking an arrival time to tapping to board, passengers interact with Modeshift-powered systems throughout the journey.

We’re hiring a Senior Android Developer to own features end-to-end across the Android apps and tools that run public transport in the field.

What you’d work on

You’ll work on the Modeshift Android applications used by operators and inspectors, and on the software behind POS terminals and ticketing/vending workflows – software that has to stay correct offline, talk to hardware, and survive real operating conditions. Recent and upcoming work includes:

• Operator and inspector apps for day-to-day fare validation and enforcement
• POS-terminal and ticketing/vending workflows
• Integration with the backend platform over REST APIs, including real-world failure handling
• Device interaction and reliability across real field conditions

You’d own a feature from design through to release, including the parts nobody likes owning.

Our stack

Kotlin/Java on Android, talking to a .NET / Azure backend over REST. Continuous delivery, every PR reviewed, automation wherever we can get away with it.

What we look for

• 7+ years building native Android apps with Kotlin and/or Java
• Solid understanding of Android architecture, lifecycle, networking, storage, and background work
• Experience integrating REST APIs and handling real-world API failures
• Git, code review, CI/CD, and release workflows
• Testable code and the ability to debug production issues
• A product mindset: edge cases, usability, and operational reliability
• AI coding tools are part of how you work. We use Claude and other frontier tools daily, and if that doesn’t excite you, you won’t like it here.

We value multidisciplinary engineers. If you’ve worked seriously in another ecosystem – backend and relational databases, the .NET stack, iOS, or embedded – that’s a huge plus here. The problems we solve cross stacks, and engineers who’ve crossed them before tend to do well.

Bonus: payment and POS-terminal software, remote device management, experience with Bluetooth/NFC/GPS, and embedded systems, or automated testing for Android.

Interview process

Short screening call first. If that goes well, an Android technical interview covering Kotlin/Java, Android architecture, API integration, testing, debugging, and release quality, plus system thinking, databases, and algorithms (general across our developer roles). The final round is with the team and focuses on ownership, communication, and how you work.

We aim to close within two to three weeks of the first call.
